Day 2 - Virginia's Wild Inhabitants
Objective:
Students will define the term habitat. They will give examples of animals that live in four different types of habitats found in Virginia.
Materials:
"Fawn in the Grass" by Joanne Ryder
"Chesapeake By Walk" by David Owen Bell
"Awesome Chesapeake: A Kid's Guide to the Bay" by David Owen Bell
"Down a River" by Carole Telford
"River Explorer" by Greg Pyers
Clear plastic bin
Dirt
Plastic animals that can be found on a farm
Paper
Crayons/Colored Pencils
Lesson Overview:
Children create a KWL chart for each habitat. They then go around to each learning station and find one animals they didn't know lived in each habitat.
Activity:
Gather students and ask students to think about what wild animals they see or think are wild. Read "Fawn in the Grass" by Joanne Ryder. Explain to students that there are many different kind of animals found in Virginia and there are many kinds of habitats and that we will be focusing on 4 different habitats - The James River, the Chesapeake Bay, their backyard, and The Blue Ridge Mountains. They are going to write down 2 animals in each section they KNOW live in each habitat. They are then going to write down two animals they THINK live in each habitat. They will then conduct research to see what animals live in each habitat using the computer, books, and a "living farm." (Have books for the Chesapeake By and animals they can find in their backyard - some are listed under references Computer research will be for the Blue Ridge Mountains, and the "living farm" will be a plastic bin filled with dirt, tractors, and different plastic animals that live on a farm.)
Assessment:
Create a foldable Mini Book of one thing they learned from each habitat.
