Day 7 - Watersheds
Objective:
Students will create and simulate a watershed, and be able to define its boundaries.
Materials:
"Awesome Chesapeake: A Kid's Guide to the Bay" by Owen David Bell
Clear plastic tubs
Watering cans
Section of newspaper
Pair of scissors
13 gal kitchen garbage bag
beaker of blue colored water
Lesson Overview:
Gather students and ask if they know anything about a "watershed." List all ideas on a board or chart paper. Read "Awesome Chesapeake: A Kid's Guide to the Bay" by Owen David Bell. After, discuss something they learned about a watershed. Explain to students that they will create a simulated watershed using the following activity. This will go into their ISN (Interactive Science Notebook). There is a page provided in the PDF for their observations. Directions will go on the right page and their blueprint of their watershed and observations will go on the left.
Activity:
Build a Watershed
In this activity, students will actually build a watershed using a plastic bin and newspaper. They will draw their watershed and write down their observations.
Assessment:
Students will discuss prior knowledge about watersheds and any new information they learned from the story. Students will then get together in small groups of 2 or 3 to make their own watershed.
